Jute is one of the longest and most used natural fibres in the textile industry, most commonly grown in South Asia.
Jute grows in plantations and the jute used in textile manufacturing is typically extracted from the bark of the white jute plant. It is a natural fibre with a golden, silky sheen and hence often called the Golden Fibre.
Jute fibre is 100% bio-degradable and recyclable and therefore environmentally friendly.
Unlike cotton, jute is a rain-fed crop with little need for fertilizer or pesticides. Jute plants also grow fast, enrich the soil and are therefore often used in crop rotation.
Jute is used in a wide range of products - bags, sacks, matting, carpets, rope - and of course feature in Zaccys espadrilles!
Cork is used as the foundation for every pair of Zaccys shoes.
Cork oak is a World Wildlife Fund (WWF) priority species. WWF treats priority species as “one of the most ecologically, economically and/or culturally important species on our planet.”
Cork oak forests are found in landscapes which cover over 2 million hectares across Portugal, Spain, Algeria, Morocco, Italy, Tunisia, and France.
Cork trees are harvested every 9-10 years and can be expected to live for 200-300 years. No tree is cut down when harvesting cork which makes the industry a near-perfect example of renewable production.
Cork’s primary use worldwide is as a bottle stopper, especially in the wine industry. Other uses include the wedge inside every pair of Zaccys!
Cork oak landscapes play a key role in ecological processes such as water retention, soil conservation, and carbon storage.
